UTAH

UTAH DIVISION OF WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RADIATION CONTROL

Uranium mills in Utah are regulated by the Utah Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control (DWMRC). Utah is a Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Agreement State. These include conventional uranium mills and in-situ leach (ISL) uranium recovery operations. In Utah there is one operating uranium mill , one mill on standby, and one reclaimed mill that has yet to be transferred to the US Department of Energy for perpetual care and maintenance. There are no ISL uranium recovery operations in Utah.

UTAH DIVISION OF OIL, GAS & MINING

Hard rock mines, including uranium mines, in Utah are regulated by the Utah Division of Oil, Gas & Mining (DOGM), whether on federal, state, tribal, or private lands. DOGM also regulates mineral exploration. The DOGM Mineral Files contain information of permitted hard rock mines, both current and no-longer operating.

UTAH DIVISION OF AIR QUALITY

The Utah Division of Air Quality (DAQ) issues Air Quality Permits. DAQ permits include permits (called Approval Orders) to construct and operate radon ventilation shafts at underground uranium mines and radon emissions from uranium mill tailings impoundments, pursuant to US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPS) at 40 C.F.R. Part 61.

The Utah Division of Water Quality (DWR) that administers the measurement, appropriation, apportionment, and distribution of the State’s water resources.

Uranium mine and mill owners must have water rights for the use of water for uranium mining and milling operations. In addition to the use of water for mining and milling, some uranium mines must pump, treat, and discharge mine water before, during, and after mining operations.

The Bureau of Land Management in Utah regulates uranium mines on BLM administered lands.

FEDERAL

DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY The Department of Energy Defense Related Uranium Mine (DRUM) Program addressed abandoned uranium mines associated with the US atomic weapons program.

NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulates some uranium recovery operations and oversees the Utah and other Agreement State uranium recovery programs.
